Personal attributes and subject selections

A career in manufacturing requires a variety of personal attributes. You generally need to be able to work as part of a team, to enjoy hands-on work and to have good problem solving ability.

Some areas of the industry require particular personal attributes from their workers, and require their workers to have knowledge in certain fields.

See each area for what personal attributes you should have, and what school subjects give you a good base of knowledge to start your training in the industry.

  • Aerospace
  • Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
  • Boatbuilding
  • Electronics
  • Engineering and light metals
  • Fibre composites
  • Food processing and supply

Want to choose subjects that will give you a good base for the whole industry? Check out Suggested Vocational Pathways Entry Requirements, a guide to help students with their high school subject selection. It has been compiled by employers experienced in recruiting and training apprentices in the manufacturing industry.

If you plan on doing a university degree, make sure you know the pre-requisite subjects for degree programs at various universities. This information can be found at QTAC.
