School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

You also may be able to commence studies in a trade area of your choice while you complete your secondary education. For more information on how you can do this, contact your school's career counsellor or vocational education coordinator.

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship gives you the opportunity to get a head start on your career.

You will study accredited pre-vocational subjects (off-the-job training at TAFE or a registered training organisation) and do a specified number of hours of on-the-job training with an employer.

Check out Train and employ for more information.

MINI PROFILE:
"I started with a school-based apprenticeship. They are a good way to work out what you like about the engineering work. I gave boiler making a go and really liked it."
Scott Johnson - Engineering apprentice.
